In his 125 pages long report EU Health Commissioner John Dalli published a list of horror for the tobacco industry.

The Commissioner plans to enlarge the health warnings on the packages from now 30% up to ¾ of the size of the packages. There are also plans for full plain packaging of a unified size without distinguishing features such as logos, trademarks etc. Furthermore the draft of law includes plans for provisions which prohibit certain additives such as menthol and extra slim cigarettes. The draft aims at equal looking and even equally tasting cigarettes.  For reasons of health protection Brussels also has plans to limit the accessibility of cigarette vending machines.

It is not absolutely clear how far Brussels may go with its massive regulations. However, it is clear that there are more regulations for the tobacco industry on the way and that it will get even harder to advertise a cigarette brand. Since the last Regulation dated 2001, there have been complaints that the EU Commission is far too reluctant enforcing the Regulations. Only a few European countries such as Great Britain, Belgium and France require health warnings with shock photos of lung-cancer etc.

Worldwide there is a stiff breeze blowing at the face of the tobacco industry, in August Australia’s Supreme Court dismissed the action of several tobacco companies against plain packaging.
