OHIM registered 1000th quality food name

Standard Vorschaubild

The Office for Harmonization in the Internal Markets (OHIM) just registered the 1000th quality food name under the Commission’s agricultural product and foodstuff quality labels. The lucky 1000 is the Piacentinu Ennese (PDO), a sheep’s cheese from the province of Enna in Sicily, Italy.

Quality agricultural products and foodstuffs can be registered with the OHIM since 1992. The popularity of the registrations increased within the last couple of years due to the enlargement of the EU and the interest of non-EU producers from all over the world. The quality registers were established to give visibility to Europe’s quality products and valorize agricultural and rural heritage. The Commission manages quality registers for protected designations of origin (PDO), Protected Geographical indications (PGI), Traditional Specialties Guaranteed (TSG) as well as two registers for geographical indications of wines and spirit drinks.
